Lutheran Social Services of New York
January 31, 2017 – For more than 130 years, Lutheran Social Services of New York has aided immigrants and refugees who have sought safety, family reunification and U.S. citizenship to become an essential part of New York’s rich cultural diversity; the immigrants we have served have given back, contributing to the American ideals of inclusion and equality.
Recent executive orders on immigration, which bar lawful admissions from seven Muslim-majority countries, direct the construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, and take unprecedented steps to prevent refugees and asylum seekers from entering the United States, run counter to LSSNY’s mission to fight on behalf of all people, regardless of race, creed, color, gender, national origin or religion.
Since 1995, our Immigration Legal Program has provided representation, legal advice and community outreach to thousands of immigrants and refugees across New York City. Along with our congregant and community partners, we represent immigrants seeking protection from persecution and violence, families seeking reunification and aspiring U.S. citizens from all over the world.
“We are proud of our ongoing and strong partnership here in New York, and across the nation with Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service. Together, we serve as witnesses to God’s love for all people and we stand with, and advocate for, immigrants and refugees. We look to transform our communities through ministries of service and justice,” said Rev. Dr. David Benke, LSSNY’s CEO/President.
As a nation of immigrants, we are stronger when we embrace diversity, inclusion and equality, and LSSNY is committed to continuing our fight to protect these American ideals.
